Real Wedding | Dominique & Andrew, The Biltmore Estate

Featured Love Story

Take a seat swooners, because today’s love story will have you weak at the knees!  The lovely Dominique of Comfy Cozy Couture emailed me a few weeks ago and had me at hello!!  She asked me where I was when she got married, and I wish I knew the same thing because her love story is right out of the book store swoon section.  From chemistry in college chemistry class, 12 months deployment, 12 months of Skype dates, a rainy ringless (it came later, must read story!) proposal in England, to a fairy tale wedding at The Biltmore Estate, Dominique and Andrew’s story is nothing short of magical. I’m honored to share their swoon worthy story with you just a few weeks after their 2nd wedding anniversary.

Andrew and Dominique DeLaney

July 31st, 2010- The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina

Love Story: As with most couples, I am sure that our stories will differ in how we met…I claim that I met Andrew during my freshman year of college at a KA frat party {classy, right?} during the first week of school. I was in a relationship at the time but told Andrew, also known as “Spam” by the majority of his college friends that I would “hollllaaaa” if things changed. A few years passed and as fate would have it we ended up having a chemistry class together. I thought he looked so familiar and when he introduced himself as “Spam” I realized this had to be the same guy I’d met before. Andrew claims that he does not EVER remember asking me out on a date that very first time…;

As the weeks passed we continued to get to know each other. Andrew was seeing someone at the time but this didn’t stop him from showing his true southern gentleman game charm! The flirting continued and Andrew tried to bribe me with Chick-fil-a breakfast most mornings before class. As the weeks went on he finally got up the courage to ask me out on a date!

Proposal Story:  After 3.5 years of dating Andrew was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq for 12 months.  It was quite possibly the longest and hardest year of my life.  To say our communication was limited would be an understatement! Thank goodness for Skype, which made him being so far away a little easier…when I could see him in the “flesh” I knew he was okay! About 8 months into the deployment Andrew had 2 weeks off.  We decided we would go to England and France since it was a shorter trip for him than traveling back to the States. We started out in Colchester, England where Andrew’s sister and husband were stationed at the time. Our second day in England we’d planned to take a walk through the rose gardens but in typical England fashion it started raining cats and dogs. We ran to take cover in one of the oldest pubs in town called The Slug & The Lettuce…romantic right? With his plans gone somewhat awry he went with it and proposed anyway and without a ring.  I know y’all are all thinking, shut the front door! But think about trying to get an engagement ring sent to Iraq…pretty much impossible and way too risky!  The ring was supposed to be meeting us in England but it was delayed so it took a detour to my mom’s house.  When I landed back in Charlotte after our trip my mom took a video of me opening it so Andrew could see…not your typical proposal story but it’s our story and I wouldn’t change a thing!

Wedding Story:  As you read, Andrew and I got engaged in England while he was on his 2 week R & R from Iraq.  Our biggest challenge was during the first 2-3 months of planning Andrew was still deployed and our communication was very limited.  Luckily, I already had my dream location of the Biltmore Estate in mind as soon as he proposed and Andrew was immediately on board with the idea!   We were quick to agree on the atmosphere for our wedding – an elegant, rustic and incredibly fun celebration of our love with our closest friends and family.

I was pleasantly surprised that Andrew wanted to be as involved in the planning process as I wanted him…although he quickly came to realize the amount of thought and detail that went into putting on such a large event.  I really wanted him to feel like this was just as much “his” day as it was mine and I tried to incorporate all of the things that were important to him into our wedding. As for decoration, the Biltmore Estate was already a breathtaking background with its picturesque views of the Blue Ridge Mountains…we didn’t want to compete with this so we chose a lot of earth tones while still incorporating pops of tonal purples and eggplants throughout the flowers and wedding decor.

My favorite part of my wedding day was hands down walking down the aisle towards my soon to be husband. I was holding the hand of my biggest fan, my big brother and seeing my vision of our perfect wedding come to life…I couldn’t have imagined anything more wonderful! We could not have been happier with the whole experience and we are still talking about how much fun our wedding was to this day!

Thanks for having me over! XoXo
