Real Wedding | Kirby & Ian, Mission Ranch in Carmel, CA

Featured Love Story

Last March, we featured a love story from one half of the fabulous blog The Short and and the Sweet of It,Alexa.

Now I’m thrilled to feature the love story of the other half of the blog, Kirby Brooks Todd, captured by the talented Rob & Lindsay Photos.

Kirby’s effortless chic style works flawlessly in the #swoonworthy backdrop of Mission Ranch in Carmel, CA.    The venue property is nothing short of dreamy and it came with sheep!!  Now that is a little sweet swoony animal.   I’m obviously swooned too much with this one to give it justice, so please enjoy their breathtaking big day and be sure to check out Kirby’s behind the love story interview and also a great TIP about wedding bands!

Swoon away!

About Me:
A part-time blogger for Short & Sweet Blog (http://www.theshortandthesweetofit.com/), I work in Marketing and PR full-time. My husband and I live in Encinitas (near San Diego) with our 2-year-old Boxer Tank. We love to travel (last year we visited Australia and honeymooned in Italy).

How We Met:

We met in college the spring semester of our sophomore year. We’d only been dating for a few weeks when it was my birthday, and he surprised me with a plane ticket to visit him on the east coast that summer (we went to school in San Diego). When I went back to California after visiting him he purchased a plane ticket to visit me in the UK the next semester, where I was studying abroad, and we’ve been together ever since.

Proposal:

One morning last fall (October 6, to be exact), I was about to go for a run when my then-boyfriend asked if I wanted to come to the beach with him while he surfed. This is a pretty standard weekend activity for us, so I threw my hair into a topknot, put on a maxi dress, and grabbed my new issue of Vogue. When we got to the beach I was spreading out my towel and before I knew what was going on, Ian was kneeling and reaching into his pocket for the ring! He’d gone ring shopping with my mom a few weeks prior when I was in Miami at a friend’s bachelorette. I was so surprised. We had another surfer walking by take our photo before rushing off to call family and friends, and celebrate with some champagne!
Guest Experience:

Mission Ranch is such a magical spot, so we kept things simple with all-white flowers and succulents, and touches of gray in the menus and pashminas we had for guests once the sun set, to tie in the gray from our wedding invitations. Otherwise, we focused on serving good food (a cheese table during cocktail hour, short ribs served with mashed potatoes and brussels sprouts for dinner, and late night snacks – grilled cheese sandwiches and), the music (classical during the ceremony and plenty of Motown once the DJ started, since my parents are from Detroit), and the bar (we had a tower of champagne coupes during cocktail hour and the bar during the reception spanned the entire room, so everyone could always get a drink if they wanted one).

Other Details:

Getting ready in the honeymoon cottage was one of my favorite parts of the day, from my sister-in-law helping my put on her veil (my “something borrowed”) to my mom helping with the clasp on the bracelet my dad gave her on their wedding day 37 years ago (my “something blue”). I carried my grandmother’s handkerchief in my pocket that day so she was with me even if she couldn’t travel from Michigan.

Just when our ceremony got emotional, my husband’s ring wouldn’t go on his finger! He’s a surfer so we ordered a size smaller to ensure it wouldn’t slip off in the water, but during the ceremony it took some work to get it on. Everyone laughed and it still makes me smile when I think about it. We knew about the sheep behind us during our ceremony, but we didn’t know that all the guests also saw a few whales while we said our vows! I wore my hair down for most of the night, but had a girlfriend put it up and added some Art Deco-inspired earrings for our first dance, which was too Alexi Murdoch’s “Orange Sky.” Our dance lesson (just one!) paid off and we nailed the dip at the end.
